DIY First Birthday Photos

Soleil is one year old! What a year it has been. She is my beautiful little girl and she has grown up into a sassy little lady. We decided to DIY first birthday photos in order to save some money, because those photographers charge close to $400!

In order to DIY first birthday photos all you really need is a camera (we have a Canon Rebel T2i, but even an iphone would do), some cute outfits and props. We chose a local university campus and a park for our settings. Get creative with this! There are hidden gems everywhere!

The key is getting the right lighting at sunrise or sunset and taking lots of pictures (I mean get snap happy people!! I had 50 really great pics out of like 500). Soleil is a morning person so we mostly did ours at sunrise  (around 7:15am). I also had my parents come with so we had 3 pairs of hands to help out.

I did most of the editing on my phone using the Snapseed app, which is super easy to use. Here is a link to the page where I posted the videos on how to use it!

So I decided to link some of the props we used, such as the balloons, outfits and decor so that you can take similar pictures or so you can be inspired to DIY first birthday photos!

  • Large mirror was hanging on our wall in our living room – from Marshalls. I don’t remember how much we paid for it.
  • Pearls are just costume jewelry that I had on hand
  • I made the headband out of twine and a faux flower I had on hand from Michael’s using hot glue
